Dolan was attacked because he knew the location of the Witch Queen’s heart which has been preserved for 800 years. Kaulder needs to find and kill the witch who cast the spell in order to save him. Dolan was attacked by witchcraft and is not dead, but in a deep coma. But Kaulder reveals the scene of the crime as an illusion. The current Dolan, 36th in the line, is played by Michael Caine which automatically boosts this film above the others I mentioned because he is always a consummate pro no matter how bad the production.ĭolan is set to retire and turn over duties to the 37th Dolan (Wood), however before he can do so, his is found dead, apparently of natural causes. Kaulder is partnered with a line of priests who all take the name “Dolan” that act as his scribe and advisor. Kaulder works with a Catholic Church sponsored organization known as the Axe and Cross. Witches and humans co-exist with a treaty that they not use magic against humans. Kaulder manages to kill the witch but she curses him with eternal life. Vin Deisel plays “Kaulder” a Viking-like warrior in the Middle Ages who leads a raid against the Witch Queen, a powerful witch who has released the Black Plague to wipe out humanity. That’s not to say it’s a great film or even a good one. But, that said, if you stacked these films in a deck, The Last Witch Hunter would rise to the top as if manipulated by a master of sleight of hand. My fear going into The Last Witch Hunter was that it would be another visual effects-laden, overblown supernatural action film in the vein of Hansel and Gretel Witch Hunters, I, Frankenstein, and Van Helsing.
